A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (ACMNP)
Primary Exhibit Hall Category:service
Vision:A Christian Ministry in the National Parks embodies and extends the ministry of Jesus Christ through worship, witness, and the development of Christian leaders.
Describe the types of ministry opportunities your agency will offer to Urbana 12 participants:ACMNP offers summer (May-June through August-October) opportunities for college and seminary students to minister, worship, witness, and work in 25 different national parks across the US. ACMNP ministry teams lead interdenominational services of worship each Sunday in park campgrounds and amphitheaters and bring Christian community to people often isolated from immediate contact with local churches. Each ministry team member is employed full time by a private concessionaire in the park and works as a desk clerk, housekeeper, bellhop, store clerk, wait staff, or other job typical of seasonal employment. Room and board is provided with co-workers in park employee housing. Besides leading worship and earning a full time income, students participate in informal relational and cross-cultural ministry among their co-workers (including many international students), develop their leadership skills, explore issues of faith and the environment, and encourage others to explore the many wilderness opportunities at their doorstep. The ACMNP experience is very similar to a chaplaincy program in the parks. We require students to serve for at least 90 days, preferably through the end of August and as close to Labor Day as possible.
